BCP is a tool to safeguard the community's rights as well as traditional knowledge and resources by providing clear terms and conditions to regulate access to their assets as well as sharing benefits that accrue from any development of these assets.
OPDP with the support of AJWS facilitated the process of developing a Bio-Cultural protocol (BCP) for the Ogiek community. The drafting of the Bio-cultural Protocol by the Ogiek community gave them an opportunity to critically reflect on their role in the management of their land and natural resources. The process also lay a ground work for community's future interventions in claiming their right to land and access to natural resources, and their participation in sustainable management.
The protocol emphasizes on FPIC and ABS principles in the use of Ogiek community’s land and resources found in it.To read Ogiek BCP, click here
